Gypsy Curtains!!

Now that i think back, i can't recall when i first discovered the idea of the "gypsy curtain".  i guess i should probably blame pinterest, gotta love all the sweet DIY's on there :-)

i like to fancy myself a gypsy gal, i'm quite the hippy chic and i love boho anything! i also love thrifting, so when i moved into my new apartment and needed some curtains i immediately siked myself out and began my mission collecting used vintage scarves. i like to call them "granny scarves". cause let's face it, most of them are in fact vintage & the majority of woman just don't use them much anymore (as far as attire is concerned). so why not up-cycle the crap outta them?!

the thrill of the hunt w/ these scarves pumped me up, i made it an adventure! I quickly found out the best spots to get good CHEAP ones. like this local second hand store (4nine place), they had a bunch and for only 50 cents a piece, steal! salvation army on the other hand wanted like 3 bucks for ONE?! okay, no deal was going down there. then some shops didn't have much of anything. so like i said, you gotta really hunt. but it's fun & worth it :)

you can always try to go for a colored theme or floral, more sheer or less sheer~ whatever. i personally liked the mix of all different colors & patterns. sometimes i would think a scarf was kinda ugly then somehow fall in love w/ it because i felt bad for it! lol. i'm not even kidding.

example this one~~
at first i thought it was gross, then i realized it's actually from Venice! it must of been someone's souvenir once upon a time. I've traveled to Venice before so it brought back memories, warmed my heart & sealed the deal, had to scoop it up <3

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy~

so there's not much as far as directions to construct these bad boys. you can use a curtain you already have that's a size you would prefer to measure (or not)~ just lay the granny scarves on top of them however you wish. mine have only two across and three down per panel, most of these scarves are pretty big so you don't need a whole lot. one set of curtains is only around 12 scarves.
sewing them in threes works & is how my mama bear and i did them, make sure to iron them nice & flat before starting the sewing!

*take the first three and sew them together in a strip.
*continue this process, then sew the strips together. two strips per each panel.

they will not always line up perfectly, some may be bigger than others. just trim the excess off to make sure each panel is the same width & length before sewing together.
when you have everything sewn together you will already see the magic unfold! they look really beautiful & it's hard to believe how EASY they are to make!

*final sewing step is just folding down the top to make the opening for your curtain rod. fold the top down about 2 inches to have plenty of room for the rod and just sew across!
~~be careful sewing, my mammy had to sew VERY slowly due to how delicate much of the material was, you don't wanna destroy all your sweet finds ;) ~~

this is how my mama hen & i made them. of course there's different ways you can go about it. i've seen ones w/ tab tops, longer ones, shorter ones, fancier ones, etc. just let your imagination have a field day!

  ~* check them out *~

yes, i have WOOD PANELING in my new place, and we're making it work!
do we have a choice? nope ;)

i tied together the scrap fabric to make these tassels. sewing is also an option but i liked the
weathered "gypsy look" :-)

love <3

this is the venice big panel we did, i wanted to switch it up a lil bit. i just love the way the sun shines through them! they really brighten up the place <3

i like my dream catcher in this window, it makes me happy.

very special thanks to my mum for helping (she's an excellent seamstress & mumsy, too).
it was a fun excuse for some mother, daughter bonding. during the process we discovered an ETSY shop that sells curtains similar to these (most are over 200 bucks a set)!! wow! so, we decided to make more and try to sell them at a cheaper price. maybe just a couple to begin with and see how it goes from there?
if anybody's interested~ give a sista a holla. or if you're up for it, enjoy the journey and make your own creation :)

thanx a heap for your view-age!
xoxo

~peace & blessin's~

  3. I am commenting to educate you on some things.
One of which is your comment "i like to fancy myself a gypsy gal, i'm quite the hippy chic and i love boho anything!" I would ask you what you think it means to be Gypsy but that sentence explains it all. Which is obviously why you chose your name Gypsy Jewls.
All of this, and I do mean all of this, is HIGHLY OFFENSIVE! Gypsy is an ethnicity of people who are also known as Romani or Roma. I know this because I am of this ethnicity. Not only that, but you have actually taken the nickname I was given as a child.
I politely ask you to educate yourself on my ethnicity, what my ethnicity gone through, and what we are about. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romani_people) In addition to that, is that you stop calling yourself Gypsy all together, being that aren't one and don't know what one is, and stop using my given nickname on all platforms you happen to be using it on (instagram, gmail, facebook, this blog, etc.). Thank you.

    1. who are you & why would you start a blogger account just to comment on my blog? pretty odd. i would appreciate it if you would share more about yourself for i feel like this is somebody sneaky trying to be a "know it all". if you truly are who say you are i respect what you said to an extent. though, there is nothing wrong w/ me "fancying myself a gypsy gal". i LOVE it. it's my favorite & am surely not about to change anything because i'm not a politically correct "GYPSY". i can bet money on who said this and honestly can't believe you don't have anything better to do then worry about my nickname! & please stop following me on Instagram while you're at it, good day to you :)

    2. one more thing incase you really are of the "gypsy ethnicity". that is fine & dandy but you must realize the name "gypsy" is more than just that of *Romani or *Roma folk. i have"educated" myself on the gypsy culture long ago, i know much of the information on your handy wiki link. there are different meanings of the name, many americans use it as more of a romanticized version. which simply describes someone who is a carefree/free-spirited person who travels often, etc. :) i figure you understand that already and wouldn't be so quick to judge me because i choose this word/name to describe myself. i would encourage you to look up "gypsy definition" on google and see what shows up. on second thought~ allow me to copy & paste :) -->

1.a member of a traveling people with dark skin and hair who speak Romany and traditionally live by seasonal work, itinerant trade, and fortune-telling. Gypsies are now found mostly in Europe, parts of North Africa, and North America, but are believed to have originated in South Asia.

  5. Her delivery was not the best, but I did agree with some of what she said. I am also gypsy, and unfortunately am used to seeing our culture described like a style of fashion or genre (ex: 'weathered gypsy look'). I like your blog and dont think you should change a thing. But maybe try to be more tolerant when someone of the culture you have adapted as your own is finding offense in something you've posted publicly online.
